Early Archives in Practice: Call for Participants

Queen Mary University of London

11 – 12 June, 2018

earlyarchives.wordpress.com
The archive is a means to ‘coordinate a single corpus in a system or a synchrony’ (Derrida, Archive Fever). In this way the archive acts as a network bringing together texts, people and collections within a single space.

Early Archives in Practice is a two day symposium, run by Queen Mary University of London in conjunction with the University’s Centre for Early Modern Mapping, News, and Networks. The symposium will offer participants a range of practical talks and workshops, and provide a platform to consider the role of archival research in medieval and early modern research today. It will consist of both panel discussions from participants as well as relevant workshops on archival practice and palaeography. We will introduce speakers from a range of archives to discuss their collections and research, including the National Archives, Oxford University, Marsh’s Library, Wellcome Library, and Lambeth Palace Archives.

The event will also provide a space for participants to share and to expand their knowledge and experience of archival research. Participants are invited to give fifteen minute presentations on the use of archival materials in their research. Papers may address any issue or experience of archival research in medieval and early modern scholarship. We are particularly interested in how archives act as networks, and how they can facilitate connections between texts, people, and collections.

To apply please submit a short proposal (up to 350 words) to earlyarchivesinpractice@gmail.com, by 20 April. This proposal should outline the topic of your paper and address the reasons the symposium would benefit your work.
