About the festival

The BFI Future Film Festival is the UK’s largest festival for young, emerging filmmakers. The festival runs across four days with events and screenings taking place both online and in-venue at the BFI Southbank, all of which are focused on helping talented young filmmakers aged 16 to 25 to break into the film and screen industries.

The Times Final Year Student Survey – paid work interviewing for The Times

The Times Final Year Student Survey team are looking for students to work as Interviewers on our upcoming project. The role requires them to find 25 final year students at Queen Mary and carry out a short face to face survey about their graduate job hunting experience. The data from this research will directly inform The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers 2023.

Students are well paid for a few hours of their time and will gain a full CV reference. Applicants must be well-connected with final year students, organised, and confident in talking to fellow students. Places are expected to be filled quickly, so get in contact as soon as possible to avoid disappointment!

Certain Blacks presents Heroes

Rich Mix London, 2 – 27 February 2023 Certain Blacks, the East London arts development organisation founded with the aim of nurturing diverse artists, returns for their 9th festival this February having been awarded Arts Council England Notional Portfolio funding specifically to support diverse-led organisations. Heroes presents performances from artists that inspire, entertain and educate including a night supporting female musicians and an evening curated by the legendary Ruff Sqwad. The festival includes a rare visit from LT Beauchamp (AKA Chicago Beau), an esteemed Chicago blues and jazz innovator who played on the 1970 album Certain Blacks by the Art Ensemble of Chicago from which the London organisation takes its name. Four very different shows at Bethnal Green’s Rich Mix from 2-17 February incorporate adventures in sound and performance, stand-up, theatre, hip hop, spoken word and grime.

Melanie Bigold (Cardiff University) ‘Books of her own: Women’s Libraries and Book Ownership in the Long Eighteenth Century’

What role did women play in the expansion and consumption of print culture between 1660-1820? Drawing on evidence of over 300 women’s libraries, including detailed records from fifty women’s book and library lists comprising some 30,000 titles, this paper will offer some preliminary details about what we have been missing in relation to women and their books in the long eighteenth century.

What is the Podcast Production Programme?

This programme is an opportunity for young people to get hands on experience in media, production and podcasting. Trainees will be officially trained on the logistics of recording; such as sound quality and handling audio equipment. Editing and production, including learning how to seamlessly edit in Audacity and post production. And marketing and distribution, learn how to identify your audience, create an online presence and monetisation!

Our podcast training programme will train a maximum of 15 young people throughout the duration of March.

Live Art Development Agency Study Room reopening 

The Study Room is our core resource, and it is housed at the LADA space in Bethnal Green. Containing over 8,000 items that include out-of-print books and rare documentation, it is the world’s largest collection of research materials on Live Art.

As of Thursday the 2nd of February 2023, the Study Room is open to visitors on Thursdays and Fridays, offering two 3-hour sessions (11am – 2pm and 2pm – 5pm) which must be booked in advance.

Mousetrap Theatre Project’s annual Youth Leadership in the Arts Conference is back, and it’s coming to the London Coliseum this half term – Wednesday 15 February 10.30am-5pm. Open to anyone aged 15-24. YLAC2023 will be hosted by members of Mousetrap’s Youth Forum. The programme will be focused on Empowerment & Resilience, and will include sessions on wellbeing in the arts, inclusivity, freelancing, overcoming imposter syndrome and much more!

This year’s line-up will include talks, panel discussions, workshops and an opening and closing speech from a VIP guest TBA! Over the course of the day, you will have the chance to listen to lively, inspiring conversations between industry experts, and gain lots of valuable tips and knowledge to help boost your career. Your £5 ticket will grant you access to events in this year’s programme and lunch will be provided. Exploring living and learning together in Tower Hamlets, the Festival is a collaboration between Queen Mary and community organisations, with over 8,000 local residents joining us in 2022. Cheer up January with free light festivals in Canary Wharf and City of London

WINTER LIGHTS: Brighten up these dark evenings with a trip to Canary Wharf to see Winter Lights, a free trail featuring more than 20 glowing artworks. Some will be familiar if you’ve been in previous years, while others are new for 2023. You’ll find them dotted around the area, both inside and outside. FREE, until 28 January

ILLUMINOCITY: We’re into the final week of IlluminoCity, a free light festival featuring two installations in the City of London. It’s your last chance to see glowing, geometric sculptures outside the CityPoint building near Moorgate, and Principal Place near Liverpool Street. FREE, until 27 January

BATTERSEA LIGHT FESTIVAL: Yep, another light festival. This one’s also free (hurrah!) and takes place in and around Battersea Power Station, with eight glowing installations illuminated every evening, and a selection of food trucks popping up to keep you fed and watered while you explore. Melanie Bigold (Cardiff University) ‘Books of her own: Women’s Libraries and Book Ownership in the Long Eighteenth Century’

What role did women play in the expansion and consumption of print culture between 1660-1820? Drawing on evidence of over 300 women’s libraries, including detailed records from fifty women’s book and library lists comprising some 30,000 titles, this paper will offer some preliminary details about what we have been missing in relation to women and their books in the long eighteenth century.

Call for Contributions: Art for the Sake of care

The Special Issue Art for the Sake of Care for Humanities explores the space between Art Practice Research and Care Ethics/Studies, highlighting how artistic and creative practice researchers contribute to a caring society. By cutting between care ethics, care theory, and art practice research, this special issue emphasizes care through aesthetic, performative and participatory spaces. Our special issue proposes the encounter of care and the arts as inquiry, as critical, dialogic, performative, and healing. Ultimately, we explore how the arts aim to foster solidarity, trust, and equity as pillars of a caring society. 

Contributions are invitation-based for contributors to the Art and Care Platform Series (www.art-and-care.com). Zoom Book Launch: Collaborative Historical Research in the Age of Big Data: Lessons from an interdisciplinary project – 21 Feb

Please join us for the launch of our short open access book, ‘Collaborative Historical Research in the Age of Big Data: Lessons from an interdisciplinary project’ (soon to be available open access by Cambridge University Press as part of the Elements Series). The event will be an online roundtable discussion, led by hosts Professor Jane Winters and Professor James Smithies, with the authors, Ruth Ahnert, Emma Griffin, Mia Ridge and Giorgia Tolfo.

Living with Machines is one of the largest digital humanities projects ever funded in the United Kingdom. The project brought together a large interdisciplinary team (39 members over its lifetime to) to leverage more than twenty-years’ worth of digitisation projects in order to deepen our understanding of the impact of mechanisation on nineteenth-century Britain. In contrast to many previous digital humanities projects which have sought to create resources, the project was concerned to work with what was already there, which whilst straightforward in theory is complex in practice. This Element describes the efforts to do so. It outlines the challenges of establishing and managing a truly multidisciplinary digital humanities project in the complex landscape of cultural data in the United Kingdom and shares what other projects seeking to undertake digital history projects can learn from the experience.

The Ivan Juritz Prize invites postgraduate students throughout Europe to submit texts, films, musical compositions, virtual documentation of artwork, excerpts of moving image work and proposals for installation and performance. Winners in three categories (Text, Sound, Visual Arts) will be awarded £1,000 each. Moreover, they will be invited to a joint two-week artist residency at Mahler & LeWitt Studios in Spoleto, Italy, which offers a unique environment for developing new ideas and artistic collaborations.

All shortlisted works will be showcased at the prize-giving ceremony at King’s College London and written up in the journal Textual Practice.

Entrants are encouraged to play with form to make us think, feel and question. The winners will be both of their time and aware of debts to the past. Ezra Pound, calling on the modern artist to ‘make it new’, was, after all, creatively translating the ancient Chinese King Cheng Tang.

All entries must be accompanied by a 150-word artist’s statement, in which you should analyse the role of experiment in your work and, if appropriate, relate your work, whether sympathetically or antagonistically, to the creative experimentation of the modernist era.

Workshop: AI and born-digital archives: Challenges and opportunities 

organised by the AHRC-funded project Unlocking our Digital Past with Artificial Intelligence (LUSTRE) led by Dr Lise Jaillant (Loughborough University).  

LUSTRE seeks to better understand how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help improve the preservation, access to and usability of government archives produced in digital form.  The Cabinet Office is a collaborative partner in LUSTRE, along with The National Archives and other organisations. 

Through a series of talks and a round table, this day long workshop will delve into the challenges and opportunities that AI offers to the management and use of digital born archives.

Poems Beyond Metaphor with Will Harris (Sat. 21 January 2023, 1–4pm UK)

A generative workshop looking at how we read poems and what we expect from them. We’ll explore metaphor and metonym, the limits of sense and non-sense, and experiment with making poems without realising!

Will Harris is a London-based writer. His debut poetry book RENDANG (2020) was a Poetry Book Society Choice, shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize and won the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. He co-edited the Spring 2020 issue of The Poetry Review with Mary Jean Chan. He has collaborated with the artist Aisha Farr, and helps facilitate the Southbank New Poets Collective with Vanessa Kisuule. He co-translated Habib Tengour’s Consolatio with Delaina Haslam in 2022. His second book of poems, Brother Poem, will be published by Granta in the UK and by Wesleyan in the US in March 2023.

OPEN CALL: GUEST WRITERS PROGRAMME

Today, award-nominated dance magazine dance art journal announces an open call for writers to take part in its Guest Writers programme which will run every Thursday from February 2023 – April 2023. This 8-week programme is designed to provide emerging writers aged 18-30 with the opportunities to develop their writing skills and gain experience in arts journalism. 

Through a series of 8 workshops with leading industry journalists and dance practitioners, participants will learn about different approaches to writing about art, focusing mainly on the field of dance. Participants will expand their definition of the reviewer or the art critic and delve into different ways of textually capturing movement. The programme culminates in a paid writing commission of £100 for each participant and a networking event at the Roundhouse in London.

Decolonising the Archive, welcomes you to participate and witness our Theatre production of POCOMANIA by Una Marson, showing for the first time in Britain after being revived through publication in 201, from a forgotten archive. Hailed as a cultural masterpiece on its Caribbean debut in Jamaica at the Ward Theatre in 1938, due to its insightful discourse around the relationship between African-origin religious ritual forms and cosmopolitan, creolised middle-class identities forging themselves outside and within colonial frameworks.

Pocomania shows for a limited time at Theatre Peckham, 31 January – 5th February in addition to creative workshops held separately (January 14th and February 6th 2023) that will explore in detail the themes, archives and content in the play.

From cities as far as Mumbai, Berlin, Ontario, Rotterdam and Limassol, A to Zine brings together over one hundred Zines submitted via our open call. These DIY publications on display offer you an opportunity to delve into the latest expressions of queer culture on topics as varied as: how to look after your mental health online; recover from your first break-up; understand the sociology of bad sex or bake bread with very unusual ingredients. Throughout the month of January, we’ve transformed our gallery to a warm space for you to visit at any time and flick through joyful celebrations of body hair, explore the colours of mushrooms, or chart the dysfunctions of the gender clinic. We’ve also equipped the space with magazines and materials for you to craft your own zines to add to our collection or take home.

Thank you to all contributors whose submissions have made A to Zine possible. Amongst the collective zine makers to also take-up residence in the gallery space will be Camp Books, Black Fly Zine, Queer Street Press, ROOT-ed, Black Hair Stories, Page Masters, Strange Perfume, Grrrl Zine. They will lead a series of practical workshops on the history and uses of zine-making.

Producing Knowledge with Film January Workshop

Do you want to make a short film as part of your academic research?

Dr Jessica Jacob, School of Geography, is inviting applicants to a training opportunity in filmmaking and film practice in an academic research-based context, to take place on January 17, 18, 19 2023.

Applicants will need to be available for all three days to participate. The workshop will be held on campus in Mile End but there is some scope to attend remotely. This workshop is open to all staff and students but spaces are limited so if interested please fill in this form by December 16.

The Journeys of Saleh bin Osman: An African Traveller in the Imperial Archive

In some of the most widely circulated images of Henry Morton Stanley, the Welsh-American explorer and travel writer poses in opposition to a subordinate black body. Audiences at Stanley’s popular lectures in Britain, Ireland, and North America were treated to a similar spectacle (in press accounts, these individuals are usually described as ‘African servants’ or simply ‘black boys’). Yet some of Stanley’s African ‘valets’ had completed feats of travel to rival the great ‘explorer’ himself. This paper will consider Stanley’s heroic self-fashioning from the perspective of one of these unheralded African travellers. A native of Zanzibar, Saleh bin Osman travelled extensively in India, Africa, Europe and North America. In his short career as a porter, servant, and translator, he navigated competing spheres of Arab, British, German and Portuguese imperial influence in East Africa. Unusually for an African recruit on European expeditions, several documents (published and unpublished) record Saleh’s experiences in his own words (albeit mediated by the racialised conventions of the imperial archive). Yet by concentrating on the traces of Saleh bin Osman’s story, we begin to discern an alternative history of the European encounter with Africa. When the subaltern figure of the ‘African servant’ asserted his limited agency to disruptive ends, both the authority of the white explorer and the racial hierarchies of Euro-American society were briefly unsettled.

‘It’s work. So work it.’: Corporate drama training in the workplace

This talk will explore the expansion of drama-based training into the workplace, and the recent growth in skills training programs and courses offered by theatres and conservatoires. Examples include (but are not limited to): the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA), Central School of Speech and Drama (CSSD) and the Donmar Warehouse. In these training contexts, the skills of professional performers are heralded as enabling managers and workers to craft confident professional performances from their inner material, promising to unleash employee ‘authenticity’ via the use of methods originally developed for performers. The rise of these offerings is fed by the increasing prioritization of effective communicative, ‘soft’ or performance skills at work, creating space for theatre institutions to capitalize by offering short courses that repackage elements of their training as now directly applicable to the non-theatrical workplace. This talk will consider the history of these forms of workplace training, look in detail at their methods and modes of delivery, and ask how the provision of drama-based training shapes modes of employee performance in the contemporary workplace. Dr Jaswinder Blackwell-Pal is a lecturer in Theatre and Performance Studies at Queen Mary. Her research considers performance and emotional labour, and the imprint of Stanislavskian modes of performer training within contemporary work. 

Queen Mary research behind art exhibition exploring politics of privacy and big tech

Just how private are your WhatsApp messages?

A new exhibition combines art with Queen Mary research exploring what privacy means in our increasingly digital world and how the idea can benefit big tech board rooms more than its users. 
 
Dr Philippa Williams and Dr Lipika Kamra are studying how Meta-owned WhatsApp can influence everyone from ordinary people to national governments. They explained: “WhatsApp is marketed as a personal space for communication with trusted contacts, but our research found it’s not safe or secure for all. Our exhibition looks at how privacy is constructed and regulated, and who by – sparking questions like, can we carry on like this, and do we want to?”

The Role of Law in Bordering, Ordering, and Othering Series The Past, Present and Future of Borders The protection of those in flight is a paramount obligation. It is a duty that transcends borders and formal categories, such as status as a refugee under the 1951 Convention/1967 Protocol, or status as a stateless person under the 1954 Convention, or as a beneficiary of complementary or subsidiary protection, or someone entitled to humanitarian consideration, or someone deemed excluded for reasons of criminality or national security, or someone otherwise extraditable, or one who is trafficked, or the victim of modern slavery, or one who flees famine or drought.

The humanitarian necessity is always there: among the questions facing lawyers, activists, and governments, as the movements of people continue to grow, are the extent to which a “principle of refuge” has normative force, and how, in any event, to galvanize and operationalize the necessary political will so that no more lives are lost, and futures can be rebuilt.

Dr Keith A. Manley, ‘Bodies in Libraries as Viewed by Agatha Christie and “Golden Age” Detective Writers’

The name of Agatha Christie is synonymous with the discovery of dead bodies in libraries, usually in country houses. This paper will consider death amidst the books in Agatha’s novels and her own upbringing amongst books. But Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple will share the limelight with other `Golden Age’ sleuths of the 1920s and 1930s, with guest appearances from Lord Peter Wimsey, Inspector John Appleby, and others. All of them appreciated libraries, and murder of course; not for the faint-hearted.

Visual and Material Forum: 1 Dec – Wang and Choudhury – Global Histories in Print and Illustration

The Visual and Material Forum has a wonderful interdisciplinary event coming up featuring the research of two QMUL doctoral researchers from different schools. This double-bill research seminar on Global Histories in Print and Illustration will present the work of Ningfen Wang (History) on representations of Black Africans in 17^th-century prints, and Aratrika Choudhury (Comparative Literature) on the British Empire and book illustrations.

The event will take place at 3:30-5pm on Thur 1 Dec in the SCR of Arts 2. It will be a hybrid event and it will also be possible to join via Teams. In Rules, historian Lorraine Daston traces the development of rules in the Western tradition and shows how they have evolved from ancient to modern times. Performing Pandemic Grief: The Arts of Losing

Birkbeck Centre for Contemporary Theatre, 17-18 November 2022 

This Wellcome ISSF-supported symposium, hosted by Birkbeck Centre for Contemporary Theatre, explores the role of theatre, performance and related art practices in the experience and expression of grief in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Planned as a hybrid event, taking place online (17 November, via Teams) and in person (18 November, Birkbeck School of Arts), the symposium approaches its subject by bringing together artists, academics, community organisers, health and social care professionals.

Mental health is a journey, an exploration, a road to travel along and today we take a moment to pause and reflect: a place to check in with ourselves. A pitstop.

Lewis Pickles is an arts in health and education practitioner working across a number of community and clinical settings.  Join Lewis to develop your own writing and artwork around creativity and mental health, reflecting on this year and looking to the next in our free online workshop. Lewis will then work with The Road team to create a ‘London Arts and Health ‘Pitstop Zine’ which will be showcased on the LAH website in an online digital sharing.

SPOTLIGHT ON: ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH

For They Let In The Light is a new live commission at Chisenhale Gallery by artist and mental health activist the vacuum cleaner (aka James Leadbitter), developed with a group of young artists he met during Spring 2021 at the Coborn Centre for Adolescent Mental Health in Newham, East London.

In his performances, films and site-specific interventions, the vacuum cleaner draws on his own experience of mental health disability, working with young people, health professionals and adults to challenge how mental health is understood, treated and experienced. This project responds to a crisis in young people’s mental health, amplifying the experiences of those uniquely isolated by the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns.

For They Let In The Light is being presented at Chisenhale Gallery on the following dates:

Friday 25 & Saturday 26 November, at 7pm

Friday 2 & Saturday 3 December, at 7pm An afternoon of ‘in-conversations’ between artists, curators and thinkers involved in the project will take place on Sunday, 4 December, 2-4pm.

This Creative Conversation will once again bring together people living, working and learning in the borough. The session will be run using the Open Space format, with no speakers and no presentations. This allows you to input into several different conversations in a single session. Tuesday 22rd November. 

RAFTS: Live
Serpentine presents a special one-night concert, bringing to life Rory Pilgrim’s film, RAFTS, beyond the screen. Created over three years with residents of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, RAFTS was made for the exhibition Radio Ballads to explore stories of support in our everyday lives. 26th November.

Tim Crouch and Andy Smith have worked together since 2004 making and presenting Tim’s acclaimed and award-winning plays including An Oak Tree, The Author and most recently Truth’s a Dog Must To Kennel. This in conversation event will see them reflect on their practice and explore key elements of their work, including notions of collaboration, context, form and content.

Tim Crouch is a writer and theatre-maker who since creating My Arm in 2003 has had work presented at (amongst others) The Royal Court, The Unicorn, NTS and the RSC as well as touring nationally and internationally. He also created and co-wrote Don’t Forget The Driver, a six-part series for BBC2.

Andy Smith is a theatre-maker whose recent works include COMMONISM, SUMMIT, and the ongoing series Plays For The People. He is a lecturer in theatre practice at The University of Manchester.

Cultural Advocacy Fellows Symposium Launch: Unexpected Solutions: Inequalities, Policy and the Cultural Sector

Queen Mary’s Cultural Advocacy Fellows scheme, a partnership between Queen Mary Arts & Culture and The Mile End Institute, is a coalition of advocates helping to make the case for the creative and cultural sectors in London, nationally and internationally. Over the next three years, our Fellows will work with artists and Queen Mary academics to tackle some of the major challenges facing the cultural sectors. Our Fellows are drawn from organisations such as London Mayor’s Culture Team, Equity, Bectu, Musicians’ Union, Arts Council England, Tower Hamlets Council, Creative Diversity Network, Society of Authors, and the Financial Times.

Join our symposium ‘Unexpected Solutions: Inequalities, Policy and the Cultural Sector’ celebrating the launch of this unique fellowship scheme, a first in Queen Mary’s history.

Spotlight Youth Arts: Creative Youth Work Advocate Roundtables

Following two successful roundtables with partners working in creative practice with young people, Queen Mary Arts & Culture will host a third roundtable on creative youth work on 3 November. The roundtables network Creative Youth Work Advocates – young people being trained as co-researchers – to our project partners, including Rich Mix, Roundhouse, The Yard, The Albany and Sounds Like Chaos. These events form part of a research project led by Spotlight Youth Arts in partnership with Arts & Culture and Arts Council England, on Creative Youth Work: Increasing inclusivity and relevance for young people accessing cultural provision.

This research brings together Queen Mary researchers, youth workers, artists, and young people to develop a methodology for Creative Youth Work. Arts Council England and the research team from the Health Engagement to Avoid interpersonal violent injury in young Londoners (HEAL) project, who are also working with Spotlight, will be attending the session.

Free Lecture by Prof. Rohan McWilliam: ‘Theatrical Celebrity and the Coming of the Picture Postcard, 1890-1914’

This talk examines the way the coming of the picture postcard in the 1890s changed the nature of theatrical celebrity and the relationship between performer and audience. Postcards are an under-used resource for the cultural historian. They were integral to the creation of the image of the star. What we find is the construction of a visual culture that sustained a fan base and predated the cinema. This paper will look at the images of performers who appeared in straight drama and in musical comedy, contrasting the images of actors and actresses. The talk raises issues about celebrity culture, portraiture, performance and sexuality.

Rohan McWilliam is Professor of Modern British History at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, and a former President of the British Association for Victorian Studies. He is at work on a history of the West End of London, the first volume of which was published in 2020: London’s West End: Creating the Pleasure District, 1800-1914 (OUP). Rohan has published widely on the histories of popular politics and popular culture, including his book The Tichborne Claimant: A Victorian Sensation (2007) and articles on topics ranging from Victorian melodrama to the Labour Party in the 1980s.

Event: How can social prescribing and palliative care intersect at the end of life? – 23 November 2022

Hannah Thomas is a soon-to-be graduate of the MA Applied Theatre at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, as well as a Senior Communities Officer at Birmingham City Council, focussing on cultural communities.

Her artistic practice centres around end-of-life palliative care arts and health practices, in which she collaborates 1-1 with a person in palliative care to develop original audio compositions based on that person’s life. 

This free online workshop will allow you to experience some of Hannah’s artistic practice, as well as engage in debate about cultural social prescribing and palliative care.

Marina Warner, “Viral Spiral: Multiple Shape-shifting from Ovid to Covid” 

The Centre for Comparative Literature at Goldsmiths, University of London, is delighted to announce the inaugural lecture in our Annual Lecture series.

A group of metamorphoses in myths and legends features gods and in between creatures, who are not quite divine and not quite mortal either,  who can change their shape multiple times. For example, Mestra, the daughter of Erisychthon, is given this gift by the gods when her father sells her, and she is able to elude the clients he panders her to.

Marina Warner will explore stories of multiple transformations in and out of different bodies, and reflect on their significance in relation to today’s concerns with fluid identities and interspecies contact and contagion.

The Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2023

The prize is free to enter and open to any citizen of a Commonwealth country who is aged 18 and over.  It is awarded for the best piece of unpublished short fiction (2,000–5,000 words). Regional winners each receive £2,500 and the opportunity to be published online by Granta magazine, and the overall winner receives £5,000.

Queen Mary Arts and Health: workshop with Theatre of the Oppressed practitioner Sanjoy Ganguly

This month, People’s Palace Projects has arranged for the internationally renowned Theatre of the Oppressed practitioner Sanjoy Ganguly to come to London. Dr Ganguly is Artistic Director of the Jana Sanskriti Centre for Theatre of the Oppressed in Kolkata, and has a huge range of experience working across health-related inquiries through performance. 

As our network continues to coalesce, we thought this would be a fantastic opportunity for us to work with Dr Ganguly in workshops on broader questions around how our collective can function meaningfully, the work we would like to do together, how to create and reflect on partnership working for the future – both within Queen Mary and beyond – and how TO practice might help us with evaluative strategies within our work.

With apologies for the short notice, we will be holding two workshops in the w/c 26 September:

• Tuesday, 27 September, 1-5pm (ArtsTwo Film and Drama Studio)
• Wednesday 28 September, 1-5pm (ArtsOne Harold Pinter Studio)

In these sessions will be focusing on our collective work in the Arts and Health network together using TO techniques.

Made in collaboration with Professor Ilan Kelman: coordinator of UCL’s Space Health Risks Research group, MOONFACE is a humorous and exuberant love letter to our nearest celestial neighbour and an exploration of how much ‘space’ we all take up in our late-stage capitalist universe. Developed with the support of Camden People’s Theatre, UCL Culture, The London Mining Network and The Yard Theatre. 

Volunteer Opportunity at Half Moon Theatre – Get Experience for your CV

It’s Lydia (studied drama and MSc creative arts and mental health), I am now working at Half Moon theatre just down the road.

We are looking for a volunteer for our Youth Theatre on Wednesday evenings with our Orbit group for school years 10-13. Friends I am working with at Care for St Anne’s in Limehouse are organising a panel event to commemorate the life of radical East End GP David Widgery who died suddenly, 30 years ago.

Some of you may know his book Other Lives, published in 1992. He was a remarkable individual active in all sorts of networks including Rock Against Racism. His book offers a profound sense of the poverty and challenges that much of the East End faced in the 1980s and it gave voice to those whose lives were being marginalised the Docklands regeneration process. Staff working in this department at the time knew David, and he had several links with Queen Mary. I think it will be a fascinating event.

The panel (7pm 28 September 2022, at St Anne’s Limehouse) comprises others who knew David and worked with him.

Uncovering the Archive Free Workshops at Iniva (Home of Stuart Hall Library)

FREE series of workshops & screenings to existing youth programmes with an aim to engage young people (16-25) primarily from marginalised communities such as Black and QTIPOC/PGM*, working class, migrant and Disabled. ⁣⁣

The intention is to introduce the archive as a resource and archiving as a mode of storytelling available to, and representative of, the identities⁣⁣ and lives of those normally excluded from history making practices. By⁣⁣ working with the collections held both at MDR and Iniva, the programme⁣⁣ aims to offer young people with the tools to confidently explore, interrogate and create the stories they want to tell or wish were told⁣⁣ through engaging activities that center creative play, conversation and⁣⁣ making. By introducing young people to places, digital spaces and people that are made for/representative of them, we hope to empower their claim to history and uphold the integrity of what is important to them.⁣⁣

We recognise that archives are often spaces accessed by people with⁣⁣ privilege ie. wealthy/higher educated/able-bodied/neurotypical, and so a⁣⁣ core objective is to work to open up these spaces through prioritising⁣⁣ access, inclusion and safety. This programme will be facilitated by⁣⁣ creative practitioners from marginalised backgrounds whose practices are informed by disruptive approaches to history telling and making.⁣⁣

Merky Books Writers’ Prize – Apply by 10 September

Merky Books is an award-winning book publishing imprint launched by Stormzy and Penguin Random House UK in 2018. It is a home for underrepresented voices and provides a platform where their stories can be told, heard and uplifted. Our aim is to publish the stories that will allow a new generation of writers and readers across the UK to see themselves represented more regularly within the pages of a book.

The winner of the New Writers’ Prize will receive a publishing contract with #Merky Books. All shortlisted writers will also be invited to our Writers’ Camp, where they will be able to participate in writing workshops, panel talks, editorial one-to-ones, and meet the #Merky Books team.

The prize will also aim to provide all applicants with the tools, information and access they need to develop their ideas, progress their writing and set off on the path to publication.

Artists wanted for recovery network

London Arts and Health is really excitingly taking applications alongside their partners Arts & Health Hub and Raw Material for the Artists’ Represent Recovery Network. The Artists’ Represent Recovery Network is a professional development programme open to 10 London-based, freelance, ethnically diverse artists working in arts & health in a participatory or community setting. The project is aimed at artists with at least 3 years of experience in this field and each artist has access to professional skills development sessions, peer-to-peer support and on-the-job training in a South London and Maudsley (SLaM) hospital ward.

The training will take place next year in 2023 as a mix of online and in-person mentoring, training, action learning and on-the-job paid placement on SLaM hospital wards. Artists can receive up to £3000 total for participating in the opportunity. The project is funded by the Greater London Authority and Arts Council England.

Grand Plan – Arts funding

Grand Plan awards £1,000 grants to creative people of colour based in the UK who want to make a new cultural project happen. It can be anything from: poetry, paintings, fashion, zines, music, food, flowers, photographs to workshops or events — whatever you want.

In this session, we will tackle all your questions about creative careers. Non-linear paths, how to make it without a niche, how to get a job without applying to 1001 different places, and much more.

Jade Coles is a creative strategist and culture legacy designer whose niche is curating cultural event programs that resonate with London’s creative, forward-thinking audiences. Jade has over ten years of experience in cultural production and event programming and creative collaborations having worked with industry leaders in the hospitality space such as Soho House, The Collective, and The Wing, Festivals like Lost Village, and a host of startups in the Creative Industries space including Creative Entrepreneurs.

Nikky Lyle is a creative recruiter with conscience, with 10+ years of experience in the industry. Nikky is also the founder of The Good Gang, Vice President of Hope for Post Quarantine, and President of Judge for D&AD 2020. During the lockdown, she started running a series of talks called Industry Leaders, with industry legends from Spotify, Vayner Media, Nike, DesignStudio, Pentagram, Wolff Olins, Rosie Lee, Jelly London, Handsome Frank, and Bulletproof.

Nikky has also recently released carefully constructed CV and portfolio guides, created with a mini team of freelancers, which have been created by creatives for creatives. They’ve received rave reviews being described as “truly illuminating” “absolute gems” “beautifully designed” and an “absolute treat to read through.

Told by an Idiot is a theatre company that makes inclusive, ambitious, and experimental theatre for anyone who breathes. We consistently experiment with what theatre can be and who gets to make it, in doing so our work blurs the line between theatre maker, participant, and audience. We nurture the skills and talents of emerging theatre makers and our work excludes no one. This internship is designed for anyone who has an interest in theatre management or producing and wants to gain experience working within a small team for a touring theatre company. We acknowledge that it can be difficult to gain experience in arts admin and management and want to extend our values of nurturing emerging talents to all aspects of making theatre, including organisational roles.

WorkPath are offering Get Crazy Creative, a 6-week digital skills programme

The programme happens every Thursday and offers young people aged 16-25 the opportunity to learn digital skills to enable them to get into specialist industries, with a focus on Digital Marketing, Social Media and Digital Design.
